Tales of bridges in Tanzania

A man arrives in very poor shape at the gates of Heaven before Saint Peter, having apparently died a violent death.
Intrigued, Saint Peter asks him: “What happened?”

The man explains: “I was a safari guide in Tanzania and I was leading a group of seven people, six men and one very domineering woman.
We were touring the southern region of the country and had to cross the rapids of the Rufiji River, Tanzania’s longest river, before heading down to its remarkable mangrove within the delta.

While crossing a liana bridge over the river, a gust of wind sent us tumbling into the void. We all managed to grab hold of the ropes somehow. We were left hanging in mid-air, and then the bridge threatened to give way under our combined weight. Someone had to make the sacrifice.
As I was the guide responsible for the group, it was my duty to let go first. I fell and was swept away by the rapids against the rocks…”

A minute later, Saint Peter sees six men arrive in the same state as the guide he has just led into Heaven. He immediately asks the new arrivals: “Were you on the bridge in Tanzania?”
“Yes,” they reply.
“But then, your guide who sacrificed himself for you — did he do all that for nothing?” asks Saint Peter.
One of the men then explains: “It’s because of that wretched woman who was with us… When the guide let himself fall, she said: ‘A man that brave deserves a round of applause…’”

Speaking of applause — and in a rather different vein — it is worth celebrating the opening of the first bridge over the Ruvuma River, the natural border between Tanzania and Mozambique.

Named the Unity Bridge, this 720 m long structure not only opens up a new transport corridor between East and Southern African countries, but should also give a boost to development in the coastal regions of Mozambique and Tanzania.
