It is a natural theatre where children can come face to face with the main inhabitants of these plains — lion, elephant, giraffe, or cheetah. The bright colours of birds moving across the sky are reflected in their eyes, and the scents of the bush reach every explorer, young and old.

At the heart of the lodges and camps, young travellers are welcomed as true guests. For safety reasons, family safaris are generally only possible from age 6 onward. A private vehicle for the family is sometimes required.
Within the properties, numerous activities are organised for children. The aim is to introduce Africa in an engaging, hands-on way that draws them into local culture: tracking animal footprints, making traditional bows and arrows, cooking experiences with the chef, bead jewellery-making workshops, lighting a campfire… An explorer’s kit is sometimes provided too, complete with a cap and a backpack filled with activity sheets, coloured pencils, and wildlife picture books.
For an immersive night’s sleep at the heart of nature, some properties offer raised platforms comfortably fitted out for two adults and two children — a chance to fall asleep within an unusual setting and environment.
South Africa is not only about encountering wildlife. It is also a journey through time, with fascinating cities such as Cape Town and Johannesburg to discover. Its historic heart holds the poignant Apartheid Museum, inviting families to engage with the country’s complex history while fostering respect for difference.
Children’s laughter will echo along the wild shores of the Wild Coast, a stretch of tropical scenery where waves break against the cliffs and a range of water activities are on offer.
