It’s 5:30 in the morning, the sky already tinged with pink. Birdsong and the hum of insects gently pull us from sleep.
At 6am, the camp gates open. I start our rental 4×4, while Juliette settles in with the park map, binoculars and camera within reach. We’re ready for an unforgettable day.
Self-drive safari in Kruger National Park: the story of an unforgettable day in South Africa.
By Juliette and Stéphanie, Africa safari specialists
Barely 15 minutes after leaving camp, our first encounter: a family of elephants crosses the track, slow and majestic. They pause for a moment to watch us. A young calf trots along clumsily, trying to keep up with its mother. We hear trumpeting echo and branches snap.
A little further on, we take a secondary track. A vehicle is stopped in the distance. The landscape opens up: golden savannah, scattered acacias… Suddenly, movement in the tall grass. A lioness and her two cubs emerge, furtive. We follow them from a distance for about fifteen minutes, taken by their fluid gait and watchful gaze.
Barely ten kilometres further, another surprise: a leopard sitting in the middle of the track. Incredulous, we cut the engine. Time stops. It’s there, calm, elegant, magnetic.
Later, we come across a herd of zebras mixed with wildebeest. A giraffe chews lazily on acacia leaves, watching us with large, curious eyes. At the end of the day, just before heading back to camp, a few hippos doze in a pool, while crocodiles bask on the riverbank.
Kruger means letting chance shape your route and nature set the pace
We return to camp just before the gates close at 5:30pm. A shower, a simple dinner under the stars… And for a lullaby, only the sounds of the African night: distant hyena calls, deep and mysterious rumbles in the dark.
Tomorrow will be another day, full of emotion.
