TIME + TIDE FOUNDATION – Conservation Programmes

In Madagascar, Time + Tide Miavana holds a unique position, on a protected island.
With a full-time team trained in wildlife monitoring and reforestation, the Foundation can play a major, directly useful role in preserving this ecosystem, through involvement in monitoring sea turtle nesting on Nosy Ankao, participating in marine and terrestrial biodiversity surveys, banding and tracking seabirds, and supporting the reintroduction of the crowned lemur, one of the smallest lemur species.

But here, as elsewhere, the success of a wildlife conservation programme often depends on how many people earn more financially by protecting animals and their habitats than by harvesting them or, in the worst case, poaching them. Through coral reef research, education of fishermen’s associations, reforestation efforts, well installation, and the training and employment of rangers and students, Time + Tide Foundation’s conservation work directly benefits 1,300 residents of the Loky-Manambato protected area. A further 5,500 residents benefit indirectly, notably through income-generating employment opportunities.
