The island-continent
By Aurélie, Madagascar specialist: “A magical and unchanging place, a pearl of the Indian Ocean, paradise on earth. At Tsara Komba Lodge, everything is beautiful, peaceful, authentic and simply perfect. This lodge embodies the art of gentle living, to the rhythm and sound of nature. Refinement in every sense, whether in the flavours, the décor, the welcome or the overall experience. The service is attentive and discreet, the smiles constant and genuine, the hosts kind and generous, the setting intimate and exclusive, the cuisine inventive and light, nature surprising and abundant, and the horizon leaves you dreaming. The ultimate luxury in the spirit of Étendues Sauvages, without ostentation — luxury found in graciousness, in the awakening of the senses, in perfect harmony with nature. To my mind, no other address matches Tsara Komba Lodge in the Nosy Be archipelago. You feel at home there, as if in a waking dream you'd wish would never end.”
Discover this favouriteAbsolutely. The destination offers plenty of variety to keep children engaged and curious. They’ll be warmly welcomed, and since the country is French-speaking, contact with locals comes easily. We can adapt the pace of the trip to your children’s age, and for a family trip, we recommend the north of the country: short driving distances, varied landscapes between discovery and beach, unusual accommodation such as treehouses, community immersion, and a wide range of activities: climbing, zip-lining, caving, hiking, cycling, quad biking, boat trips, lemur spotting, snorkeling, and swimming with dolphins or turtles.
A fine invitation to reconnect with sensory pleasure and childhood wonder!
There’s a reason Madagascar is called the “eighth continent” or the “Continent Island”. To see all its finest sites, you’d need at least 3 months! So you’ll need to make choices, based on your preferences, trip length and budget.
Allow 10-12 days to visit a single region and 15-20 days for 2 regions.
Air connections aren’t always optimal, and since domestic flight schedules and rotations vary daily, transfer times between regions need to be factored in.
To give you an idea: if you dream of seeing the Avenue of the Baobabs, a stage of at least 3 days is required (flight to Morondava, then a 7-hour drive on dirt roads…).
Northern Madagascar is a concentrated version of the island and deserves a trip of its own, to take in its striking, rugged landscapes and make the most of the Nosy Be Archipelago, its beaches and the Indian Ocean.
A stay on the island of Sainte-Marie combines more easily with exploring the Pangalanes Canal and the Andasibe reserve, with its numerous lemurs.
One piece of advice: take the time to properly explore each site. A trip packed too tightly can quickly become exhausting if transfers end up taking over your itinerary.
If your budget allows, there is one way to discover all the must-see sites in a single trip: private plane (see our examples of trips to Madagascar).
No vaccination is mandatory, but Madagascar’s health conditions call for precautions.
Diphtheria-tetanus-polio vaccination must be up to date.
Other recommended vaccinations: typhoid fever, hepatitis A and B (as advised by your doctor or a vaccination centre).
Malaria, bilharzia and other tropical diseases are present on the island. Preventive malaria medication should therefore be planned for.
Purifying water or drinking bottled mineral water is essential. Fresh vegetables and fruit should be avoided unless peeled.
With these few precautions, you can enjoy your stay with complete peace of mind.
